The  Montessori Center of Nyack

OUR SCHOOL
At the Montessori Center of Nyack, learning is a natural and joyful experience for every child.  Education is not regarded as the passive acceptance of other people’s ideas and pre-existing knowledge, but the active pursuit of many different experiences--social, physical, emotional, as well as cognitive.  Placed in a supportive environment where individual rates of growth and development are respected and nurtured, children develop a healthy, natural curiosity and a life long love of learning.

Founded in 1978, the Center has been serving the community’s children for nearly three decades.  Our teachers, like our students, come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, but all have been carefully chosen and trained through the Association Montessori Internationale, the American Montessori Society or other accredited Montessori teacher training programs.  Special teachers are experts in their fields.  We are an affiliate of the American Montessori Society and licensed by New York State as a day care center, and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

OUR CLASSES

Classrooms at the Montessori Center of Nyack offer a prepared environment where children are free to respond to their natural drive to learn and work. The holistic curriculum, implemented under the guidance of Montessori trained teachers, allows each child to discover the joy of learning and develop social and intellectual discipline that is the foundation for a happy and productive future. Students are encouraged to acquire respectful and caring attitudes.

Dr. Montessori observed that in a classroom of children of mixed ages, the younger children benefited by emulating the older children, and the older children grew in strength and competency by helping the younger children. To this end, our classes contain students ranging in age from 2 years 9 months through 5 years.

The descriptions on this website indicate the kinds of activities to which all children are exposed and from which they absorb lasting impressions.  Mastery is achieved according to your child’s personal timetable of growth and ability.  The activities are organized into categories here for convenience, but in the classroom they are interrelated.

OUR HISTORY
Maria Montessori was born in the province of Ancona, Italy, in 1870. Her parents encouraged her to become a teacher, one of the few careers open to women of that era. Reluctant to accept a traditional role, she sought and won admission to the University of Rome Medical School. In 1896, she became the first female graduate.

On the staff of the University, she took a special interest in the process by which young children learn. She founded the Casa dei Bambini (Children's House), an innovative child care program, to study childhood learning further. Her work led to a quiet revolution in educational theory and practice, the Montessori Method. Through her research, writings, and lectures, Dr. Montessori became an internationally respected authority on education.

Today's worldwide network of Montessori schools is the product of her insight, originality, and untiring dedication.
